The National Network for Children (NNC) has become part of the Public Council to the Parliamentary Committee on Demographic Policy, Children, and Families, established on 25 June 2025, with the nomination of Maria Brestnichka as its member.
The Public Council is set up as an advisory body composed of representatives of non-governmental organisations and citizens engaged in demographic policy, children, and family issues, who contribute to representing their interests before Bulgarian institutions, as well as representatives of the academic community and public media. Its role is to provide expertise and ensure the participation of a wide range of stakeholders concerned with demographic issues, children, and families.
It is worth recalling that the Committee on Demographic Policy, Children, and Families was established in the previous National Assembly at the initiative of the NNC (link) to focus on meaningful and effective policies in support of child well-being in Bulgaria. It is somewhat concerning that the NNC is the only organisation focusing specifically on children’s rights represented in the Council. The full composition of the Public Council can be viewed here.
As a coalition of over 130 organisations and individuals who support nearly 200,000 children annually, the National Network for Children takes on its participation in the Public Council with a commitment to work for policies and decisions based on facts and data – including those systematically monitored over the past 14 years in the annual Report Card: What is the average grade of the State in child care? Equally important is taking into account the views not only of a wide range of experts, but also of parents and – of course – of the children themselves.
