The National Network for Children has outlined its position on the Ordinance on Conditions and Procedures for Tendering and Competition of the Sofia Municipal Council, by advocating amendments to Chapter IV of the said Ordinance, “Competitions for Organizing Student Canteens.”
In its position, the National Network for Children stresses that quality, healthy and varied food at school is essential for children’s proper physical growth, healthy development and promotion of correct eating habits. The basic position of the group of civil society organizations is that parents and the school board should play a decisive role in the selection process and that students should also participate in the selection of a company to manage the school meals and canteen, in line with the principles of promoting child participation that are shared by the NNC.
The non-government organization urges that the nutritional needs of children with allergies and special dietary needs are also taken into account in determining the weekly menu in the canteen and in the preparation of food in the canteen.
