The data shows that 340,000 children are living in poverty
Almost every second child in Bulgaria lives at risk of poverty according to the National Statistics Institute. The data was quoted by representatives of the National Network for Children during a press conferance in the beginning of May. The presentation took place in Ruse and it was part of the project “Foster care. Create the future “ in support of the foster care. The discussion involved media representatives, nongovernmental organizations and structures of the Social Assistance Agency from the cities of Ruse and Razgrad.
According to the Social Assistance Agency at the end of 2011 children in social services numbered 6226. All the babies got in medical social services for children, in 2011 numbered 2508. Foster care service is an opportunity for overcoming one of the main problems of children in institutions – their physical and intellectual retardation.
Research on Romanian organization in 2009 showed that when a child lives in institution, for every 2.6 months spent there the kid lags behind with one month of its physical development.
